As a result of the war in Ukraine, it is reported that Yandex, "Russian Google", has removed national borders in its Maps application

National borders between countries are now shown as boundaries between regions within the same state.

This is a change that does not fail to react in the midst of the war between Russia and Ukraine. Since Thursday 9 June 2022, Yandex Maps, "Google Russia" has decided to no longer show country borders on its maps.

The disappearance of borders on the Yandex Maps map applies not only to Russia, but also to the entire planet. Just by zooming in on the map location points, maybe the borders could be seen, but they merged into the demarcation between different parts of America.

This change to the base map has sparked a lot of backlash, with some imagining that Yandex Maps wants to avoid being forced to redraw the borders as Russia advances into Ukraine.

“Our job is to show the world around”
For its part, the search engine explained that it was a question of moving towards "local use" with "universal services". His goal: "Help users find nearby organizations and places, choose public transportation, and plan routes," he told the New York Times.

The company has also indicated that other changes are coming soon. “Our job is to present the world around us. Therefore, mountains, rivers, arctic circles, and other data specific to this type of map will appear on the map,” concluded Yandex Maps.
