WHATSAPP will Increase the Deadline for Delete Sent Messages, to 2 Days!
Table of Contents
WhatsApp first released the feature to delete sent messages in group chats in 2017. At that time, the time limit was quite small. A maximum of eight minutes from the sent message. But the app then changed that timeout to one hour.
There were hints last year signaling that WhatsApp would extend this time limit to three months. However, the change was never rolled out. Maybe because the feature developers realized that the timeout was too long. Apparently, plans to extend that time limit still exist. But not in a matter of weeks.
Reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has increased the time limit for deleting sent messages to 2 days and 12 hours for some users in the latest beta release v2.22.15.8. This is much longer than the current time which is only 1 hour, 8 minutes and 16 seconds.
Telegram's main competitor app allows its users to delete sent messages within 48 hours of being sent. So WhatsApp is still 12 hours ahead here.
There is no indicator in WhatsApp beta notifying users of this timeout increase. You just have to try it yourself by sending a message to the group and then trying to delete it after a few days.
This isn't the only improvement WhatsApp is working on to delete messages. A feature to allow group admins to delete chats from members in a group is also under development. This feature can reduce the detrimental debate that usually occurs in groups. However, this feature can also be used to silence other people who want to express opinions.
Meta's messaging app is known to take longer to add new features to later stages of development, but the extra time needed could lead to more stable feature releases.(*)
