How old have you been using a smartphone? Since 10 years ago? If so, maybe you can feel the power of a number of social media platforms in this decade (2010 - 2020).

So strong, between these platforms even 'kill each other'. There have been many social media platforms that finally had to say goodbye because their users were increasingly being abandoned.

Surprisingly, some of the closed social media had dominated. Such as Blackberry Messenger or BBM, Yahoo Messenger, and Google+. Well, the mainmain.id team has summarized several social media that were launched and closed this decade.

Instagram

The application, which was launched in 2010, was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. It persisted until the end of the decade and is even more popular.

In 2012, this image-sharing app was acquired by Facebook. Until now there are 500 million active users. Not just sharing images in the feed, but users can also post 24-hour snippets with the Instagram Stories feature.

Until 2018 Instagram was the second most downloaded free app on the App Store.

Snapchat

Evan Spiegel launched the Snapchat application in 2011. At that time Facebook, Twitter and BBM were at their peak of popularity. But Snapchat is still able to attract an audience. As of October 2019 there are 210 million daily active users. They play with messages that disappear. This feature was later adapted by Instagram and Facebook.

Telegram

This instant messaging application was launched in 2013. Telegram came as a competitor to WhatsApp. They claim the app is more secure. But Telegram users still can't beat WhatsApp. Until 2018 the number of users could reach 200 million monthly active users. Telegram continues to compete with WhatsApp by updating its features.

TikTok

Even though it was only launched in 2017, TikTok has managed to become the fastest growing social media. Until now, the number of users is not much different from Instagram. Nearly 500 million active users. Recent data from App Annie shows that TikTok is continuing its explosive growth worldwide.

Pinterest

This application, which offers online information discovery in the form of images, gifs, and videos, was launched in 2010. Until last August 2019, there were 300 million active Pinterest users. Over time, the platform has attracted more than 200 billion Pinterest Pins, and more than 4 billion Pinterest boards. Interestingly, 70 percent of Pinterest users are women.

Tinder

Tinder came into existence in 2012 and was immediately received with open arms. Now it has even become very popular. Not only among teenagers, but also among adults. As of 2018, there are more than 57 million people using Tinder worldwide. A total of 4.1 million Tinder subscribers pay for premium Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold. Tinder is used in 190 countries, and is available in 40 languages.

Facebook Messenger

The application, which was launched in 2011, is separate from Facebook. Facebook users who want to chat with their friends via messages Must download Facebook Messenger first. Last year Facebook introduced AI bots for businesses to easily chat with clients.

Periscope

Periscope is a live streaming app launched in 2015 by Twitter. As the successor to Meerkat, Periscope is still able to survive in the midst of the collapse of several social media. Unfortunately Twitter does not disclose Periscope usage statistics.

WhatsApp

This instant messaging app was actually launched at the end of the previous decade. Precisely in 2009. Although this article discusses the list of social media born in 2010-2019, the existence of WhatsApp cannot be ignored. Because the evolution occurred in this decade. This app became the most popular messaging app in the world in 2015. And, as of February 2018, the app is enjoyed by more than 1.5 billion users worldwide.

Google+

When it launched in 2011, Google+ promised a lot. But on the way, this application had to give up the competition against Facebook and other social media. Security issues are the main cause. This forced Google+ to close in April 2019. The company also claims that its social media platform users are not many.

BlackBerry Messenger

BlackBerry Messenger, also known as BBM, also decided to close in early May 2019. The difficulty in bringing in new users was the main reason. BBM is one of the instant messaging applications that was popular in its time. However, its popularity has decreased with the advent of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Vine

In 2016, Twitter announced that it was shutting down Vine, a popular video loop app that offers users the ability to create and share six-second videos.

This app can't keep up with the growing popularity of Instagram. Users who were once considered Vine celebrities started posting videos on Instagram instead. Instagram can be considered a big reason why Vine has become obsolete.

Yahoo Messenger

90's kids are definitely no stranger to this app. Yes, this application was once a part of their social media life. In its prime years (2000-2010), this service was most widely used because it was an alternative to sending messages other than via email and SMS messages. However, with the arrival of smartphones, Facebook, and finally WhatsApp, Yahoo Messenger lost its power and users started to switch.

Path

The app, launched in November 2010, functions as a kind of personal journal that can be shared with family and friends. Path once gained more than one million users. But it ended up having to die in 2018 due to a lack of growth and increased competition.

Friendster

You could say Friendster is a platform that started the era of social media. Friendster was first launched in 2003. But with the advent of Facebook they quickly lost credibility due to technological problems.

There was a problem in the feature rollout, and it became irrelevant. Moreover, Facebook at that time was gaining momentum quickly. Interestingly, in the early days, Friendster investors were reported to have approached Facebook with an acquisition deal, which Mark Zuckerberg later turned down.

Zuckerberg then bought the entire social network patent portfolio Friendster for USD 40 million. Friendster finally closed its platform in 2015. (*)
