4 Alternative Technologies to Smartphones: What Might Replace Them?

Table of Contents

Smartphones are predicted to become obsolete and face extinction in the future. Several devices are expected to replace the position of phones in the future.

Nokia CEO, Pekka Lundmark, estimated that smartphones would become outdated by 2030 and advanced technology would take their place.

According to Lundmark, one alternative to replace smartphones is chips implanted in the human body. Additionally, it is predicted that devices such as AR/VR will have more significant growth in the future.

However, Lundmark did not specify the devices that would replace smartphones in the future, as quoted from Mashable on Wednesday (15/2/2023).

Lundmark only explained that the replacement device for smartphones would be supported by super-fast connectivity 5G and later 6G. Although the 5G network has just started to be released in some countries, 6G is likely to arrive by 2030.

List of devices to replace smartphones

There are several other devices that are expected to replace phones. Here's a summary, Thursday (16/2/2023):

Electronic Tattoo

This technology is designed by a biotechnology company called Chaotic Moon. According to Marca, the Electronic Tattoo will analyze and collect information from the human body. The aim is to process and display media and sports information.

Additionally, data will be useful for preventing and controlling diseases in the body. Electronic Tattoo is also expected to improve physical performance and sports through early signs.

The tattoo is placed on the skin and has small sensors and trackers. Information will be sent and received through special ink that can conduct electricity.

Augmented Reality (AR)

AR is known to be available in some smartphone products to support device performance. However, finally, the technology has its own device by creating a trusted and efficient experience.

Several tech giants such as Samsung, Facebook, and Amazon are investing further in this technology. It is predicted that there will be a 50% display installed on the head by 2024.

Not through a phone anymore, but AR will expand to other devices such as googles, glasses, and perhaps through implants.

Virtual Reality (VR)

VR is also already available supported on several smartphones by connecting to a headset and downloading an application. Several companies including Samsung, Microsoft, Nokia, and Intel are also interested in the technology and making big investments.

In the future, smartphones are no longer needed to enter the VR world. There are devices such as HTC Vive Pre and Playstation VR that are the gateway to it.

Artificial Intelligence Voice Assistants

Voice Assistants can already be used with separate devices from smartphones. Alexa, Siri, and Cortana can already help with daily life from ordering food, telling weather information, and helping with navigation.

In the future, AI voice control is expected to be the way to answer questions on Google. A 2019 study by Gartner stated that 20% of all interactions with smartphones through virtual assistants, that number will continue to grow as it advances in the future.
