Discover Apple's advice on how to steer clear of the hazards associated with sleeping alongside a charging iPhone. Don't risk disrupting your heart device due to electromagnetic fields emitted by your iPhone.

Are you one of those who like to sleep with your iPhone right beside you? If so, exercise caution, as this seemingly harmless habit can pose unexpected dangers. Apple itself has issued a warning to iPhone users against doing so.

Why Is Sleeping with a Charging iPhone Dangerous?

The iPhone ranks among the world's most popular smartphones. However, like any electronic device, it generates heat while charging. This heat can escalate if the iPhone doesn't receive adequate air circulation, especially if it's placed under a pillow or blanket.

Excessive heat can lead to iPhone overheating, potentially damaging its internal components. Moreover, this heat can pose risks of fires, electrical shocks, or injuries to users and their surroundings.

To counter these risks, Apple advises iPhone users to charge their devices on flat, dry surfaces like a table and keep them away from soft or warm objects, such as blankets, pillows, or the user's body.

This warning is conveyed by Apple through its iPhone support page, applicable to operating systems (OS) iOS 12 through iOS 16.

How to Safely Charge Your iPhone?

Apple claims that iPhones and the power adapters they sell comply with surface temperature safety standards established by various countries and international organizations.

Nonetheless, a warm phone surface can still cause discomfort, especially with prolonged skin contact. Therefore, Apple reminds users to exercise common sense and avoid situations where their skin comes into contact with the iPhone, power adapter, or wireless charger while the device is in use or connected to a power source for an extended period.

"For instance, avoid sleeping on top of your iPhone, power adapter, or wireless charger. Also, refrain from placing your iPhone and other accessories under blankets, pillows, or your body when the iPhone is charging," writes Apple on its official website.

Apple also emphasizes that users with certain medical conditions that make them less sensitive to heat on their skin should exercise extra caution.

As previously noted, sleeping with a charging iPhone can lead to several dangers, including fires.

"If you don't follow these safety guidelines, you could experience a fire, electrical shock, injury, or damage to your iPhone or other property," warns Apple.

Users are also advised not to use damaged or wet charger cables and to avoid charging their iPhones when the device, cable, or surrounding area is wet. This can pose similar hazards, as reported by KompasTekno from Apple's official website.

How to Maintain a Safe Distance Between Your iPhone and Chest?

In addition to warnings about sleeping with a charging iPhone, Apple also provides other recommendations to iPhone users, especially those with medical implants like pacemakers inside their bodies.

According to Apple, consumer electronic devices like the iPhone 14 emit electromagnetic fields. These components can interfere with the functioning of medical implant devices, potentially leading to fatal consequences.

Implantable pacemakers and defibrillators typically have sensors that are sensitive to magnets and radio frequencies when in close proximity.

For this reason, Apple advises iPhone users to maintain a minimum distance of 15 cm between the phone and their chest. When wirelessly charging the iPhone, this distance should be increased to at least 30 cm.

Apple further advises users with medical implants to consult their doctors and the device manufacturers for more specific guidance.
